The breakaway cable attaches to the rear bumper or frame of the tow vehicle, so that if both the coupling and safety chains fail, the cable pulls the breakaway pin from the brake switch and actuates the electric brakes. Per Wacker Neuson service guidelines, the breakaway system should be tested before every tow and monthly when the machine is not in service. To test, disconnect the trailer wiring plug from the tow vehicle before pulling the breakaway pin, as failure to disconnect first can cause severe damage to the electronic brake control. The system is then verified by attempting to tow at less than 5 mph to confirm the brakes engage properly.
