Gearbox performance is critical to proper trowel operation. During routine maintenance, inspect the gearbox shaft alignment with the spider assembly—adjustment bolts should barely contact the lower wear plate with maximum 0.10 inch clearance. The thrust collar bearing and bushing work in conjunction with the gearbox to maintain smooth rotation and prevent bouncing or uneven swirl patterns in finished concrete. If the thrust collar varies by more than 0.02 inch when rotated on the spider, or if the thrust collar bushing allows more than 3/32 inch tilt measured at the outer diameter, gearbox and related components should be replaced to prevent blade pitch control issues.
