This variable pitch drive pulley controls the torque converter system in ride-on power trowels, delivering the precise speed and torque adjustments needed for both float pan applications and high-speed concrete burnishing. The pulley's moveable face is controlled by roller weight arms and springs that automatically change position according to engine speed, working in tandem with the driven pulley to maintain optimal belt tension throughout the RPM range.

At idle, the drive pulley maintains a large diameter position while the belt remains loose and stationary. As the engine accelerates, the pulley diameter decreases while the driven pulley increases, bringing the belt to proper tension. At high engine speed (160 RPM for this configuration), the drive pulley reaches maximum diameter, the driven pulley contracts to its smallest size, and the belt achieves full tightness for peak power transfer. The 5-7/8" outer diameter and B-type belt profile are engineered to deliver consistent performance across all finishing phases.
