The pinion gear is a critical drive component in the MT-75H tamping rammer's gearbox assembly, transmitting engine power through the oil bath lubrication system to generate the 690 blows per minute at 2,865 lbs. of impact force that makes these rammers so effective. This gear meshes directly with the drive train to convert the circular motion from the centrifugal clutch into the linear compacting force at the foot.

The MT-75H uses an oil bath lubrication system that keeps this pinion properly lubricated during operation. Regular inspection through the oil level sight glass at the rear of the tamper foot helps ensure adequate lubrication of this gear. Signs of pinion wear or failure include unusual grinding noises from the gearbox, reduced tamping force, inconsistent impacts, or complete loss of foot movement even when the engine runs at the specified 4,000 rpm.
