The guide handle is the primary control interface for MTX series tamping rammers, enabling operators to safely direct the machine while standing behind it during soil compaction operations. This critical component must be held firmly with both hands at all times to control direction and advance speed during tamping—the rammer is specifically designed to advance while tamping, and pulling back slightly on the handle causes the rear of the foot to contact soil first for faster forward movement.

Operating the rammer from any position other than behind the machine while gripping the guide handle firmly with both hands can result in damage to the unit and serious personal injury. The handle works in coordination with the throttle lever to control engine speed (3,800 to 4,100 rpm) and achieve optimal foot impact rates of 644-695 impacts per minute. During operation, the handle transmits force from the powerful four-cycle gasoline engine through the centrifugal clutch system to deliver tremendous compacting force at the tamper foot.
