The ignition switch with key controls engine starting and shutdown functions on Multiquip LT-12 series light towers. This critical component features three positions: OFF, ON (with preheat indicator activation for Lombardini/Deutz engines), and START. When turned clockwise to ON, the switch activates the preheat system until the indicator lamp extinguishes, then continues to START position to crank the engine. Upon engine start, the key automatically returns to the ON position for continued operation.

This switch is essential for proper engine operation and integrates with the light tower's automatic shutdown systems for low oil pressure, high coolant temperature, and alternator charge failure.
