Bartell Global Floor Scraper Troubleshooting Guide

Machine Will Not Power On

Possible Causes

  • No power reaching the outlet or circuit
  • Damaged power cord or plug
  • Faulty switch or button

What to Inspect and Fix

  • Check the power-on indicator lamp. If it is not lit, try a different power socket before assuming the machine is at fault.
  • Inspect the full length of the cord for cuts, abrasions, or crushed sections. A damaged cord is a replacement item, not a repair item.
  • Examine the plug for bent pins, burn marks, or cracked housing.
  • Test the emergency stop switch and the red OFF switch to confirm they are not stuck in the off position.
  • If power was interrupted mid-job, switch the machine off fully, then switch it back on. Supply interruptions require a manual restart.

Drive Unit Not Moving the Machine

Possible Causes

  • Safety switch on the handlebar not engaged
  • Foot lever not properly locked
  • Drive wheels worn beyond usable life

What to Inspect and Fix

  • Confirm you are pressing and holding the safety switch on the handlebar. The drive unit motor only starts when that switch is actively engaged and the handlebar is pushed forward.
  • If you need hands-free operation, step on the foot lever at the base of the handlebar to lock the drive in the moving position.
  • Inspect the drive wheels for visible wear, flat spots, or cracking. Drive wheels are a wear item and must be replaced when they no longer provide adequate traction. Do not continue operating on worn wheels.

Blade Not Stripping Floor Covering Effectively

Possible Causes

  • Blade is twisted, rounded, or excessively worn
  • Blade installed in the wrong orientation for the subfloor type
  • Floor covering strips cut too wide

What to Inspect and Fix

  • Blades are self-sharpening through contact with the floor surface. Only replace the blade if it is visibly twisted, rounded off, or no longer making clean contact.
  • Check blade orientation. On normal and hard subfloors, the bevel should face upward. On soft subfloors, the bevel should face downward. Switching orientation for the wrong surface type will reduce stripping performance significantly.
  • Cut floor coverings into strips no wider than approximately 35 cm (12 inches) before stripping. Wider strips do not increase speed and will strain the blade and machine.
  • On coverings bonded with epoxy or similarly aggressive adhesives, cut strips narrower than standard to reduce load on the blade.
  • Before installing or changing any blade, bring the motor to a full stop and disconnect from the power supply. Tooling is sharp. Position your wrench on the opposite side of the blade to avoid injury.

Excessive Vibration or Unusual Noise During Operation

Possible Causes

  • Loose fasteners on the machine body or blade mounting
  • Blade impacting an embedded anchor screw or floor bolt
  • Center weights not locked into the correct position

What to Inspect and Fix

  • Stop the machine immediately if you detect unusual vibration or noise. Do not continue operating. Disconnect from power before inspecting.
  • Check all bolts and screws across the machine for tightness. Loose fasteners can cause both noise and mechanical damage. Retighten anything that has worked loose.
  • Sweep the floor before resuming work. Anchor screws and bolts embedded in or protruding from the floor can cause serious damage to the machine and stripping head if struck by the blade.
  • Verify that the center weights are locked into the correct position before operation. Improper weight positioning affects machine balance and vibration behavior.

Motor Fan Clogged or Motor Running Hot

Possible Causes

  • Dust and debris buildup on or around the motor fan
  • Machine not cleaned after previous use

What to Inspect and Fix

  • Clean the motor fan after every use. This is a scheduled maintenance item at every service interval, from the first 50 hours through 400 hours.
  • After each job, clean the entire undercarriage and surrounding components. Debris accumulation is the leading cause of avoidable mechanical failure on floor strippers.
  • If operating in heavy dust conditions, connect a dust collector to the machine. This protects both the operator and the motor.

Handle Position Causing Operator Fatigue or Poor Control

Possible Causes

  • Handle set at factory default position, which is the lowest setting for transport

What to Inspect and Fix

  • The handle ships in the lowest position for transport. Before operating, loosen the two screws at the base of the handle, adjust to a comfortable working height for the operator, and retighten securely.
  • A handle set at the wrong height increases fatigue and reduces control. Take the time to set it correctly before starting any job.

When to Call a Dealer vs. Fix It Yourself

Handle It on the Job Site

  • Cleaning the motor fan and undercarriage after each use
  • Tightening loose bolts and fasteners
  • Adjusting the handle height
  • Replacing a worn or damaged blade using proper lockout and safety procedures
  • Switching power outlets when the indicator lamp shows no power
  • Sweeping and clearing the floor of embedded hardware before stripping

Call Your Bartell Global Authorized Dealer

  • Any electrical fault inside the machine, including switch or motor issues that persist after basic checks
  • Cord or plug damage that requires internal wiring work
  • Drive unit motor failures that are not resolved by correct handlebar and foot lever operation
  • Any inspection or service due at the 100, 200, 300, or 400 hour intervals if you do not have a qualified mechanic on staff
  • Warranty claims, which require the machine to remain unmodified and in the hands of the original purchaser

The manufacturer warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for 12 months from the date of purchase on the handle and housing assembly. Tooling and power units are excluded. Warranty is void if the machine is modified, if non-OEM parts are installed, or if scheduled maintenance is not performed.
