Why Maintenance Matters for This Machine

A Bartell Global mortar or concrete mixer is a production tool. Skipping routine maintenance does not just shorten equipment life, it can void your warranty, cause unplanned downtime on an active job, and create genuine safety hazards for your crew. The manufacturer's warranty requires that the machine be properly maintained per the owner's manual. Running the engine without oil, for example, voids the warranty outright. Keeping up with the schedule below protects your investment and keeps the machine earning.

Daily and Pre-Operation Checks

Before every start, work through the following checks. These take only a few minutes and catch most problems before they become costly repairs.

• Engine oil level: Check before every use. All mixers ship without oil. Running the engine dry causes immediate engine damage and voids the warranty.
• Fuel: Use clean, fresh, automotive-grade unleaded gasoline. Mixers ship without fuel. Check the fuel filter and replace it if it is clogged or damaged.
• Air cleaner: Confirm the element is in good condition and properly seated. A damaged or missing element allows abrasive dust into the engine.
• Grease fittings: Grease all six fittings every day of use. Four fittings are on the pillow blocks, two are on the drum trunnions. Two additional fittings are located under the engine shroud on the intermediate shaft pillow blocks. Do not skip this step, dry bearings fail quickly in a mixer application.
• Paddles and blades: Verify paddles are adjusted to approximately 1/16 inch interference. This is mandatory after installing rubber blades.
• Hardware: Check for loosened bolts before starting. After the first 5 hours of operation, re-torque all hardware and then follow the scheduled intervals.
• Guards and shrouds: Confirm all guards, shields, and covers are in place. They protect both the operator and nearby structures from rotating parts.
• Tire pressure: Check at each use on the concrete mixer. Low pressure affects stability during towing and positioning.
• Kill switch: Locate and test the kill switch before starting. Know how to stop the machine before it is running.
• Drum wash: Wash the drum at the end of every workday. Pull the locking pin, tip the drum forward to drain excess water, then return the drum to towing position and secure with the locking pin before moving the machine.

Periodic Maintenance Schedule

Use the table below as your working reference. Intervals are based on hours of operation. Hardware re-torque after the first 50 miles of towing applies to both mortar and concrete mixer models.

Key Service Items

Engine Oil

Use SAE 10W30 engine oil. Check the level before every use. Change the oil at 200-hour and 400-hour intervals. Never drain used oil into the ground, open waterways, or sewage drains. Dispose of it properly at an authorized facility.

Hydraulic Fluid

On models equipped with a hydraulic system, use H68 hydraulic fluid. Check the fluid level at each use. Do not mix fluid types or allow the reservoir to run low.

Air Filter

Inspect and clean the air cleaner element at 100-hour and 200-hour intervals. Replace the element at the 300-hour mark. In dusty jobsite conditions, inspect it more frequently. A clogged element starves the engine of air and accelerates wear.

Spark Plug

Check and adjust spark plug gap at 100, 200, and 300-hour intervals. Replace the spark plug at 400 hours. Refer to the engine manufacturer's manual for the correct gap specification for your specific engine.

V-Belts

Inspect V-belts at every 50-hour service interval. Look for cracking, fraying, or glazing. A belt that has stretched to the point where the idler no longer functions properly must be replaced immediately. A slipping or broken belt stops the drum and can cause uneven loading on the drivetrain.

Roller Chain (Electric Models Only)

Oil the drive chain once per week on electric mixer models. Check for excessive play between links or damaged links at each inspection interval. Do not allow the chain to run dry.

Grease Fittings

All six grease fittings must be serviced every day of operation, not weekly. The four pillow block fittings and two drum trunnion fittings are the primary wear points on this machine. Two additional fittings for the intermediate shaft pillow blocks are located under the engine shroud. Missing a day of greasing under heavy use conditions is enough to initiate bearing damage.

Signs It Is Time to Replace Parts

• V-belts: Replace when cracked, torn, or stretched to the point that the idler does not apply proper tension.
• Roller chain: Replace when there is excessive play between links or when individual links are visibly damaged or kinked.
• Gears: Replace when teeth are cracked, missing, or have worn to a sharp edge. Sharp teeth indicate significant wear and pose a risk of sudden failure.
• Hardware: Replace any bolt or fastener showing corrosion, thread damage, or deformation. Replacement hardware must be grade 5 and zinc plated.
• Rubber blades: Replace when blades no longer maintain the 1/16-inch interference adjustment at the paddles. Worn blades reduce mixing efficiency and can damage the drum interior.
• Air cleaner element: Replace at 300 hours or sooner if the element cannot be cleaned or is physically damaged.
• Spark plug: Replace at 400 hours or if inspection shows fouling, erosion of the electrode, or cracking of the insulator.
• Safety and operation decals: Replace any decal that has become difficult to read. Operators rely on these for safe use of the machine.
