Engine Won't Start or Dies Under Load

Possible Causes

Low or stale fuel in the tank
Clogged air filter restricting airflow
Fouled or worn spark plug
Choke left in the closed position after warm-up
On propane-equipped units: low tank pressure or a faulty regulator

What to Inspect and Fix

Check fuel level and replace stale fuel. Gasoline degrades quickly in hot conditions.
Remove and inspect the air filter. Clean or replace if fouled with concrete dust.
Pull the spark plug and check the gap and electrode condition. Replace if the electrode is worn or carbon-fouled.
Confirm the choke is fully open once the engine is warm.
On propane models, check the tank valve is fully open and that the regulator is functioning. A frozen regulator line on cold mornings is a common cause of no-start conditions.

Blade Speed Is Low or Inconsistent

Possible Causes

Engine not reaching full throttle
Worn or slipping drive belt
Gearbox issue reducing output RPM
Blades improperly pitched or adjusted

What to Inspect and Fix

Verify the throttle is set to full operating speed. The BXR836 runs at 145 RPM under gas and 130 RPM under propane. The Titan96 can reach 180 RPM. Know your spec and confirm the engine is hitting it.
Inspect the drive belt for glazing, cracking, or slack. A slipping belt robs blade speed without any obvious engine symptom.
Check blade pitch. Blades set too aggressively create excess drag and reduce effective speed. Adjust pitch gradually and test on the slab.
If RPM drops under load despite correct throttle and a good belt, suspect the gearbox. Bartell's heavy-duty gearbox is built for longevity, but internal wear does occur over time.

Machine Pulls to One Side or Steering Is Unresponsive

Possible Causes

Uneven blade pitch between the two rotor heads
Loose or misadjusted steering linkage
Worn twin-stick lever components
One rotor spinning slower than the other

What to Inspect and Fix

Check that blade pitch is matched evenly across both rotor heads. Even a small difference causes the machine to track to one side.
Inspect the twin-stick multi-directional lever assembly for play or loose pivot points. Tighten or replace worn linkage hardware.
Confirm both rotor assemblies are spinning at the same speed. A drag on one side, caused by a tight gearbox or obstructed blade, will pull the machine.
On the Titan96 with dual-position steering, confirm the steering column is locked into the correct position and not shifting during operation.

Excessive Vibration During Operation

Possible Causes

Bent or damaged blade
Loose blade spider or rotor hardware
Foreign object lodged in the rotor
Engine mounts worn or loose

What to Inspect and Fix

Shut the machine down immediately if vibration is severe. Inspect each blade for bends, cracks, or missing sections. Replace any damaged blade before continuing.
Check all blade mounting hardware and the spider assembly for loose fasteners. Torque to spec.
Look for wire, rebar tie wire, or debris wrapped around the rotor shaft. This is a frequent jobsite issue that causes sudden imbalance.
Inspect engine mounting bolts. Loose mounts transfer engine vibration directly through the frame.

Machine Is Difficult to Transport or Position on the Slab

Possible Causes

Incorrect lift rigging
Transporter or hoist setup not used correctly
Machine weight not accounted for in planning

What to Inspect and Fix

The BXR830 at 600 lbs fits through a standard doorway and into most pickup truck beds. If you are struggling to move it, confirm you are using the optional convenient transporter accessory designed for it.
The BXR836 at 615 lbs is built for easy hoisting to multi-story jobsites. Use all designated lift points and confirm your rigging is rated for the load.
The Titan96 provides four lift points plus a single lift hook under the seat. Use all four lift points for balanced hoisting. Do not use the single hook for anything other than single-point lifts where site conditions require it.
Never exceed the rated operating weight when a weight plate add-on is installed on the Titan96. The add-on allows up to 225 lbs of additional weight, which changes the rigging and transport load significantly.

When to Call a Dealer vs. Fix It Yourself

Handle these yourself on the jobsite:

Air filter cleaning or replacement
Spark plug inspection and replacement
Blade replacement or pitch adjustment
Belt inspection and replacement
Debris removal from rotor assemblies
Loose hardware and fastener checks

Call your dealer for these issues:

Internal gearbox wear or failure
Engine fuel system diagnosis on EFI-equipped Titan96 units
Propane regulator replacement or system diagnosis
Steering linkage damage beyond adjustment
Any condition where the machine cannot be safely operated and the cause is not immediately visible
