Bartell Global Vertical Shot Blaster: Operator Guide for Contractors
The Bartell Global SPE V2 and SPE V3 are purpose-built for preparing vertical steel surfaces inside and outside storage tanks, shipping structures, and petrochemical facilities. Both machines deliver dust-free operation and can achieve SA3 standard cleaning. If you are running one of these machines for the first time or training a new operator, follow this guide from setup through shutdown.
1. Before You Start
Pre-Operation Inspection Checklist
Complete this checklist before every shift. Do not start the machine if any item fails inspection.
- Confirm the power supply matches the machine requirement: three-phase electric for both the V2 and V3
- Inspect the blast head for cracks, wear, or loose components. The blast head is constructed of manganese steel and should show no visible damage
- Check abrasive levels and confirm the recovery system is clear of debris
- Inspect the vacuum system connections for blockages or leaks
- On the V3, inspect the magnetic roller clamp for proper function and confirm it holds firm to a steel test surface before use
- On the V2, verify the mobile framework is stable and all fasteners are tight
- If using the V3 with a rigging system or crane, inspect all rigging hardware before connecting
- Confirm the remote control unit (V3) is functioning and the signal is clear
- Check that the access port is at least 24 inches (60 cm) wide if the V2 needs to be dismantled and moved through a confined entry point
- Verify all operators and ground crew are wearing required PPE: hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, and gloves at minimum
2. Setup
SPE V2 Setup
The V2 is designed for internal tank walls up to 2 metres from the floor. Position the mobile framework at the starting point along the tank perimeter. Ensure the blast head is set at the correct height for the first pass. Connect the three-phase power supply and confirm the motor engages without abnormal noise or vibration.
If the V2 needs to pass through a confined access port, dismantle it to fit within the 24-inch (60 cm) opening, then reassemble inside. Follow the assembly sequence in your specific model manual.
SPE V3 Setup
The V3 is suspended by rigging or crane for working on internal and external tank walls at height. Attach the machine to the rigging system using inspected hardware. Lower the V3 onto the steel surface and confirm the magnetic roller clamp engages firmly. The clamp eliminates abrasive loss and prevents dust emission at the work face. Test the remote control from ground level before beginning any blasting operation.
3. Operating the Machine
Step-by-Step: Start to Shutdown
- Step 1: Clear all non-essential personnel from the work area
- Step 2: Confirm the blast head is against the steel surface and the magnetic clamp (V3) or framework (V2) is secure
- Step 3: Start the vacuum and abrasive recovery system before engaging the blast head motor
- Step 4: Engage the blast head motor and allow it to reach full operating speed before moving
- Step 5 (V2): Drive the unit along the tank perimeter at a steady, controlled pace using the variable speed drive. Maintain consistent travel speed to avoid uneven surface prep
- Step 5 (V3): Use the remote control from ground level to move the unit across the surface. The self-propelled variable speed drive gives you full control of travel rate
- Step 6: At the end of each pass, raise the blast head to the next working height and repeat
- Step 7: Monitor abrasive levels continuously. Refill before the hopper runs low to maintain consistent blast coverage
- Step 8: To stop, reduce travel speed to zero, disengage the blast head motor, and then shut down the vacuum system
4. Key Safety Points
- Never position anyone directly in the path of the blast head during operation
- On the V3, confirm the magnetic roller clamp is fully engaged before starting. A partial grip on the steel surface is a drop hazard
- Do not operate the V3 rigging system without a qualified rigger or trained crane operator present
- Keep the work area below the V3 barricaded while the machine is suspended
- Do not bypass or disable the dust collection and vacuum system. These machines are rated for dust-free operation and the system must be functioning at all times
- Inspect abrasive for contamination at the start of each shift. Contaminated abrasive reduces cleaning performance and can damage internal components
- Shut the machine down immediately if you notice abnormal vibration, noise, or any loss of magnetic grip on the V3
5. After Operation
Shutdown and Storage
- Run the recovery system until all abrasive has been collected from the blast head and hoses
- Power down all systems and disconnect from the three-phase supply
- Remove and inspect the blast head for wear. Manganese steel components have a finite service life and should be measured against manufacturer wear limits
- Clean out the abrasive hopper and recovery system to prevent moisture buildup and clogging
- On the V3, clean the magnetic roller clamp surfaces and check for debris that could affect grip on the next use
- Store the machine in a dry, covered location. If storing for an extended period, follow the long-term storage instructions in your model manual
- Log any wear, damage, or operational issues observed during the shift so they are addressed before the next job
6. Keep Your Machine Running Right
Consistent maintenance between jobs is what keeps a Bartell Global shot blaster performing at full capacity. Worn blast wheels, depleted abrasive, and neglected clamp systems lead to poor surface prep results and costly downtime on the job site.
