How to Operate the Bartell Global HEPA Dust Extractor: A Field Guide for Contractors

The Bartell Global HD series HEPA dust extractors (HD1, HD2, HD3) are built for construction environments where dust control is non-negotiable. This guide walks first-time operators and new crew members through setup, operation, and shutdown using procedures drawn directly from the official operation manual.

1. Before You Start

Run through this checklist before every shift. Do not plug in the machine until each item is confirmed.

Dust collection bag is installed and properly seated
Pre-filter and HEPA filter are in place and undamaged
Top cover is closed and all hooks or nuts are secured
Hose is connected with end fittings properly attached
Power cable and plug show no cuts, crushing, or fraying
Outlet voltage matches the rating plate on the machine (HD1/HD2: 120V; HD3: 230V or 120V depending on model)
Outlet is properly grounded
Machine is on a firm, level surface with the wheel brake engaged
All guards and covers are in position

If any item fails inspection, resolve it before operating. Do not run the machine without a dust bag and filters installed.

2. Setup

Unpack and confirm all accessories are present: hose with end fittings, metal wand, and floor tools
Connect the hose to the machine inlet (2.5 inch inlet on all HD models) and to your tool or floor attachment
For the HD1, the standard hose is 1.5 inch diameter by 16.5 feet; the HD2 and HD3 use a 2 inch diameter by 24 foot hose
Thread the fold bag through the bag holder. Pull the inner end upward, strap the holder opening with the belt, then pull the outer end down and seal it with a zip tie
Plug into a grounded outlet. If using an extension cord, confirm the cord rating is appropriate for the machine's amperage draw

3. Operating the Machine

Starting

Turn on the power switch. Dust-laden air is drawn through the hose at high speed, slowed by the cyclone, and filtered first through the pre-filter and then through the HEPA filter before clean air is exhausted.

During Operation

Keep hair, loose clothing, and body parts away from all openings and moving parts
Do not open the vacuum container while the machine is running
Monitor suction. A drop in performance usually means the filter needs cleaning or the bag is full

Filter Cleaning (Jet-Pulse)

Clean the filter whenever suction drops, before changing the bag, or at the end of a work session.

Cover the inlet by lifting the inlet valve. Let the machine build vacuum for 4 to 5 seconds.
Push the filter cleaning handle down firmly and release it. Repeat five times. Allow the machine to rebuild vacuum between each repetition.
Push the inlet valve back down to reopen the inlet.

If suction remains poor after cleaning, the pre-filter needs replacement. If suction is still weak after replacing the pre-filter, replace the HEPA filter.

Shutting Down

Turn off the power switch
Separated dust drops through the bottom flap into the collection bag when the machine powers off. If dust is stuck, break it loose by tapping the bag or tank firmly with a rubber hammer
Unplug the power cord from the outlet

4. Key Safety Points

This machine is rated for dry, non-combustible dust only. Do not use it to pick up liquids, flammable materials, solvents, hot ash, or burning substances
Do not use outdoors or on wet surfaces. Store indoors
If the thermal protector trips, turn off the machine, unplug it, and check for a full bag, a clogged hose, or a blocked filter. Reset time can be up to 45 minutes
Do not attempt to clean HEPA filters. Washing or striking the filter media destroys it
Do not puncture the HEPA filter. Doing so disperses hazardous dust
When replacing filters, wear protective glasses, gloves, and an FFP3 respirator. Place used filters directly into a sealed plastic bag for proper disposal
Only qualified service personnel should perform repairs. Use manufacturer-specified replacement parts
Do not modify the machine from its original design

5. After Operation

Complete the filter cleaning cycle before changing the bag
Change the fold bag by releasing the belt, removing the bag holder, sealing the full bag with a zip tie, and installing a fresh bag
Wipe down the exterior. Do not use a high-pressure washer, and never direct water at any openings
Inspect the power cord and hose for damage before storing
Engage the wheel brake and store the machine indoors in a dry location
Dispose of all contaminated consumables, including used filters and full dust bags, according to applicable regulations
