How to Operate a Bartell Global Ride-On Trowel: First-Use Guide

How to Operate a Bartell Global Ride-On Trowel: A First-Use Guide for Contractors

Getting on a ride-on trowel for the first time takes some practice. This guide walks new operators through every step, from pre-op inspection to shutdown, using procedures drawn directly from the Bartell Global owner's manual. Follow these steps closely and you will protect both the machine and the concrete finish you are working to achieve.

1. Before You Start

Complete these checks before every use. Skipping them risks voiding your warranty and damaging the machine.

  • Check the engine oil level. Running the engine without oil voids the warranty immediately.
  • Check the gearbox oil level on both gearboxes using the sight plugs. Oil should read at the halfway mark on the sight glass. Titan models use the level indicator seam as the reference point. Use only Agma 8 Mobil SHC Gear Synthetic ISO 680 oil to top up.
  • Confirm the fuel tank is full. Fuel is not shipped with the unit. Use an approved safety container and do not mix oil with fuel.
  • Grease every spider plate fitting. There is one grease fitting per arm. A four-arm spider plate has four fittings. Grease all of them every time the machine is used.
  • Grease the six bearings located above the gearboxes and in the drive system, along with the U-joints in the drive system.
  • Inspect blade pitch. Pitch must be set flat before transporting the machine. A pitched cable under load can break.
  • Confirm all guards are in place. Check for any fuel leaks and fix them before starting.

2. Setup

If this is the machine's first use, treat it like breaking in a new vehicle. Start at half to three-quarter throttle and build up gradually before running at full throttle. Refer to the engine manufacturer's manual for specific break-in hours.

  • Attach steering handles by aligning them over the handle sleeves and tightening the set-screws. This does not apply to BXR836 or BXR830 models.
  • Verify pitch control cable tension. Turn the crank counter-clockwise to the stop position and tighten until cable slack is removed. After adjustment, turn the crank clockwise approximately 24 turns and confirm you can pass a business card between the yoke arm and gearbox at the check point, but the gap should not exceed one-eighth of an inch.
  • Confirm the seat is secured to the frame.
  • If you are working above grade, erect a barrier along the slab edge before beginning. The barrier must meet all applicable codes and must be strong enough to stop the trowel from going over the edge.

3. Operating the Machine

Starting in Warm Temperatures

  • Sit in the seat or press the left foot pedal to engage the safety switch. The engine will not start unless this switch is active. Do not bypass or tie down this switch.
  • Set the throttle to no more than one-quarter position before starting. A higher throttle setting can engage the centrifugal clutch and spin the blades unexpectedly.
  • For diesel engines in cold conditions, hold the key between run and start for 15 seconds to activate the glow plugs before cranking.
  • Turn the ignition key fully and allow the engine to warm up before moving to full operation.

Steering

Test steering on a finished section of floor with blades flat and engine at low RPM before working on fresh concrete.

  • Move both handles together in the same direction for straight-line travel.
  • Move handles in opposite directions to rotate the machine on its axis.
  • Move the right handle sideways to travel in that lateral direction.
  • Pitch settings affect steering response. Test at different pitch angles before committing to a finishing pass.

Blade Pitch During Finishing

Adjust pitch using the crank handle on the pitch control tubes without stopping the machine. Each spider plate adjusts independently. Do not let the machine sit stationary on soft concrete as this strains the clutch. If the machine has been sitting, break it free from the concrete before engaging operation.

Stopping the Machine

  • Bring throttle down to low idle and hold for a few seconds.
  • Remove your left foot from the safety switch pedal.
  • Turn off the ignition key.

4. Key Safety Points

  • Keep untrained personnel away from the machine at all times.
  • Never fuel the machine while the engine is running.
  • Never work in an enclosed area without adequate ventilation to clear exhaust fumes.
  • Avoid operating over stub pipes or floor obstructions. Contact can throw the operator or cause serious machine damage.
  • Excess water on the concrete surface can cause sudden loss of steering control.
  • Disconnect the battery before performing any electrical maintenance.
  • The hot muffler will cause serious burns on contact. Stay clear of it during and after operation.
  • Always operate from the seated position to maintain machine balance.

5. After Operation

  • Clean the machine after every use. Removing concrete residue from the undercarriage and surrounding components is the single most important regular maintenance task.
  • Apply a spray-on release agent before each use to make post-job cleanup faster and reduce wear on seals, belts, and bearings.
  • Use a power washer for thorough cleaning, particularly on the undercarriage.
  • Set blade pitch to flat before storing or transporting the machine.
  • Use the transporter for moving the unit around the job site only. It is not rated for towing the machine off-site.
  • Log the date, operation performed, and any parts used in your maintenance log.

6. Keep Your Machine Running Right

Schedule your first service after 25 hours of use and follow Bartell Global's routine service intervals from that point forward. Machines that are not serviced according to the manufacturer's schedule risk premature failure and loss of warranty coverage. The engine governed speed range is 2000 to 3600 RPM. Do not adjust beyond the manufacturer's specifications.
