How to Operate a Bartell Global Scarifier: A Practical Guide for Contractors

Whether you are running a Bartell Global scarifier for the first time or putting a new operator on the machine, getting the process right from the start protects your crew, your equipment, and the surface you are working on. This guide walks you through pre-operation inspection, setup, operation, and shutdown in plain, practical terms.

1. Before You Start: Pre-Operation Inspection Checklist

Complete this inspection before every use. Do not start the machine if any item fails.

Check the engine oil level and top up if needed before starting the engine.
Inspect the fuel level. Fill with the correct fuel type specified in your model's manual before operation begins.
Examine all bolts, fasteners, and drum assembly components for looseness or visible damage.
Inspect the cutting drum and cutting tools (flails, cutters, or stars depending on your configuration). Replace any that are cracked, worn, or missing.
Check the belt condition and tension. A loose or cracked belt needs to be replaced before running the machine.
Confirm the depth adjustment mechanism moves freely and holds position.
Inspect the dust shroud and collection bag or vacuum connection for damage or blockage.
Check that all guards and covers are in place and secured.
Confirm the work area is clear of debris, loose material, trip hazards, and bystanders.
Review the surface for embedded metal, expansion joints, and unexpected transitions that could catch the drum.

2. Setup

Proper setup directly affects cut quality and equipment life.

Select the correct cutting drum and tooling for your application. Flails are used for aggressive material removal. Star cutters or milling cutters suit lighter profiling and coating removal.
Set the cutting depth using the depth adjustment handle or knob. Start shallow on your first pass and increase depth as needed. Cutting too deep on the first pass strains the engine and can damage tooling.
Attach the dust collection bag or connect the vacuum system. Scarifying generates significant dust. Dust collection is not optional on most jobsites.
Position the machine at the edge of the work area with the drum raised clear of the surface before starting.
Confirm the power source is appropriate for the model you are using. Electric models require the correct voltage and amperage at the outlet or generator. Verify the cord gauge and length meet specifications to avoid voltage drop.

3. Operating the Machine: Start to Shutdown

With the drum raised and all controls in the neutral or off position, start the engine or energize the motor according to your model's starting procedure.
Allow the machine to reach operating speed before engaging the drum.

Making Your First Pass

Lower the drum to the surface using the depth control while the machine is running.
Begin moving forward at a steady, controlled pace. Do not force the machine or push it faster than the drum can cut cleanly.
Maintain consistent forward speed. Stopping with the drum engaged on the surface will cause the tooling to cut a groove or gouge.
Overlap each pass by approximately one to two inches to avoid ridges between passes.
For aggressive material removal, make multiple passes at increasing depth rather than one deep pass.

During Operation

Keep both hands on the handles at all times.
Watch for changes in surface condition, joints, or embedded material.
If the machine vibrates excessively or the engine bogs down, raise the drum, stop, and inspect the tooling and depth setting before continuing.
Empty the dust bag before it becomes full. An overfull bag reduces suction and allows dust to escape into the work area.

Stopping a Pass

Raise the drum clear of the surface before stopping forward movement.
Never stop the machine with the drum in contact with the surface unless shutting down completely.

4. Key Safety Points

Wear appropriate PPE at all times: safety glasses, hearing protection, a respirator or dust mask, steel-toed boots, and gloves.
Keep all bystanders at least 10 feet away from the operating machine. Tooling can eject debris at high speed.
Never reach under the machine while the drum is moving or the machine is running.
Do not operate on wet surfaces unless the machine is rated for that use.
Disconnect power or shut off the engine before performing any adjustment, tooling change, or maintenance.
Know where the emergency stop or power shutoff is before you begin each shift.

5. After Operation: Shutdown and Storage

Raise the drum fully before shutting down the engine or cutting power.
Allow the machine to cool before performing any inspection or cleaning.
Remove and clean the dust bag. Inspect it for tears before storing.
Inspect the cutting tooling for wear or damage. Replace worn flails or cutters before the next use so the machine is ready to work.
Clean debris from around the drum, belt housing, and chassis using a brush. Do not use compressed air in a way that forces debris into bearings or the belt housing.
Check the engine oil level again after a full day of operation.
Store the machine in a dry, covered location with the drum raised off the ground or resting on a protective surface.
Log any issues noticed during the shift so they are addressed before the next job.
