How to Operate a Multiquip Cut-Off Saw: A Field Guide for Contractors
Whether you are running a Multiquip walk-behind pavement saw or a masonry table saw on a job site, getting the operation right from the start protects your crew, your blade, and your machine. This guide covers what you need to know before the first cut and how to shut down correctly when the job is done.
1. Before You Start
Complete a walk-around inspection before every use. Do not skip this step with a new operator on the machine.
- Check the fuel level. Use fresh unleaded gasoline and do not overfill the tank.
- Inspect the air filter. Replace it if it is clogged or damaged.
- Check the cutting blade for cracks, chips, or warping. Discard any damaged blade before cutting.
- Confirm the blade guard is in place and secured. Never operate the saw with the blade guard removed.
- Verify the V-belt cover is installed. Never run the saw without it.
- Check the water supply system. Make sure the water pump is fully submerged if using a tank, or that the garden hose connection to the water source is secure.
- Inspect the spindle grease zerks and lubricate as needed.
- Clear the saw path of all debris and obstructions before moving into position.
2. Setup
- Set the blade depth using the raise/lower crank handle. Turn clockwise to lower the blade, counterclockwise to raise it. Lock the blade depth in position before cutting.
- Raise the spindle high enough that the blade clears the pavement surface before positioning the saw.
- Connect the water supply. For a garden hose connection, attach to the water source connector. For a tank setup, confirm the pump is submerged and turn the valve to start water flow.
- If using an electric model, plug the water pump power cord into the appropriate receptacle.
- Put on approved eye protection and hearing protection before going any further.
3. Operating the Machine
Starting the Saw
- For gas-powered models, set the On/Off switch on the engine to the ON position.
- In cold weather, push the choke knob down to close the choke. In normal conditions, leave the choke open.
- Pull the recoil starter handle firmly to engage the engine.
- For electric models, turn the Power On/Off switch to the ON position.
- Once the engine or motor is running, confirm the water supply is flowing before cutting.
Making the Cut
- Always cut at full throttle. Cutting at reduced throttle can cause the blade to bind or stop suddenly in the slab, which creates a serious injury risk.
- Lower the rotating blade into the cut. On walk-behind saws, step on the blade raise/lower foot pedal to lower the blade. Hold the cutting head handle as you do this.
- Once the blade reaches the preset depth, walk behind the saw at a steady pace. Do not rush the cut.
- Keep hands and feet away from the blade guard and blade at all times while the machine is running.
- Do not place hands or fingers near the cutting blade for any reason while it is rotating.
If the Blade Gets Stuck
The only acceptable way to free a stuck blade is to remove the saw from the blade. Do not attempt to force or pry the blade free. If needed, make a parallel relief cut next to the stuck blade to free it. Once the blade is free, inspect it for damage before continuing. Discard it if it is damaged.
Restarting After an Interruption
If the engine stops or is shut off while the blade is still in the cut, follow these steps in order:
- Turn all Engine Off switches to OFF.
- Raise the blade fully out of the cut.
- Restart the engine using the normal starting procedure.
- Restart blade rotation, then carefully cut up to the stopping point.
- Stop blade rotation, lower the blade guard back to its original position, and continue.
4. Key Safety Points
- The engine stop switch on the handlebar functions as both the emergency shut-off and the primary ON/OFF switch. Know where it is before you start cutting.
- Always run the water supply when cutting concrete or asphalt. Dry cutting without proper cooling damages the blade and creates hazardous dust.
- Never remove the blade guard during operation.
- Keep all bystanders clear of rotating parts and the saw path.
- On electric models, the motor has a manual-reset thermal overload switch. If the motor overheats and shuts off, allow it to cool before resetting.
5. After Operation
- Bring the saw to a complete stop before performing any maintenance or blade changes.
- Turn the fuel valve to the OFF position after use.
- Turn the On/Off switch to OFF.
- Shut off the water supply and drain the water tray if applicable.
- Inspect the blade for damage. If the blade is cracked, chipped, or warped, remove it before the next use.
- Wipe down the saw and check all guards and covers before storing.
- Store the saw in a clean, dry location away from fuel sources.
