How to Operate a Multiquip Cut-Off Saw: A Field Guide for Contractors

Whether you are running a Multiquip MP2 masonry saw or a PS4030 walk-behind, the fundamentals of safe operation are the same. This guide walks first-time operators and trainers through the full process, from pre-op inspection to shutdown and storage. Read the full operation manual for your specific model before starting. This guide does not replace it.

Before You Start

Complete every item on this checklist before you touch the power switch or pull the recoil handle.

Read the Safety, General Information, Inspection, and Pre-setup sections of your model's manual completely.
Inspect blade flanges for damage and excessive wear. Clean the blade before installation.
Confirm the blade fits snugly on the shaft and seats flush against both the inside and outside flanges.
Verify the blade's rated operating speed exceeds the spindle speed of the saw.
Confirm the blade is rated for the material you are cutting. Do not assume one blade fits all jobs.
Confirm you are using a wet cutting blade. The PS4030 and similar saws are engineered for wet cutting only.
Check that the water supply system is connected, functional, and will flow to the blade during operation.
Inspect all blade guards. Blade exposure must not exceed 180 degrees.
On electric models, confirm the power ON/OFF switch is in the OFF position before blade installation.
On gasoline models, confirm the engine start switch is in the OFF position before blade installation.
Tighten the 5/8-inch blade mounting bolt to 125 to 175 foot-pounds of torque.

Setup

Mount the blade guard on the correct side for your cutting job. The tapered mounting clip locks the guard into place under the weight of operation, providing a rattle-free fit.
Never remove the front half of the blade guard on saws where it is not designed to be removed. On guards 36 inches or larger, a removable hinge pin allows front-half removal. The rear half must remain in place.
On table saws like the MP2, place material on the conveyor cart against the backstop before starting the motor.
Raise the blade above the surface you plan to cut before startup. The blade must never contact the material during startup.
On gasoline models, tighten the fuel cap, open the fuel petcock, and position the saw on level ground before starting. Never start the engine on a slope.

Operating the Machine

Startup

Confirm the blade is raised clear of the material and all guards are in place.
On electric models, turn the ON/OFF switch to ON. The blade will begin to rotate.
On gasoline walk-behind models, start the engine with the control handle in the NEUTRAL position to prevent unexpected movement.
Allow the blade to reach full operating speed before beginning any cut.

Cutting

Stay alert to the rotating blade at all times. Keep hands away from the blade path. Severe injury or death can result from contact with a rotating blade.
Confirm water flow to the blade is active before cutting begins.
Lower the blade into the material steadily. Do not force the cut.
Only cut the material the blade is specified for. Match the blade to the job, not the other way around.
Never lift the blade guard while the blade is rotating.

Shutdown

Raise the blade fully clear of the material.
Turn the ON/OFF switch to OFF on electric models, or shut the engine down on gasoline models.
Wait for the blade to come to a complete stop before approaching the blade or making any adjustments.

Key Safety Points

Never operate without blade guards fully in place.
Never place hands near the blade during operation.
Never transport the saw with the blade mounted.
Never tip the engine to extreme angles. Oil can migrate into the cylinder head and make starting difficult.
Never attempt to lift the saw alone. Use two people, or use properly rated ramps for loading and unloading.
Do not use handle bars or the front pointer as lifting points.
If parking on a slope, engage the parking brake and turn the saw across the angle of the slope to help prevent downhill movement.

After Operation

Shut down the engine or power before performing any inspection, cleaning, or blade removal.
For gasoline models being stored or transported long distances, drain the fuel tank. Always tighten the fuel cap securely and close the fuel petcock.
Remove the blade before transporting the saw to or from the job site.
Inspect blade flanges and guards after each use. Replace worn or damaged components before the next job.
Flush and inspect the water delivery system to prevent mineral buildup and blockages.
