How to Operate a Multiquip Jumping Jack Rammer: A Contractor's Guide
Whether you're putting a new operator on the machine or running one yourself for the first time, this guide covers what you need to know before, during, and after operation. These procedures apply across Multiquip's tamping rammer lineup, including the MTX60, MTX70, MTX80, MTR-40HS, MTR40F, and MTR-80L series.
1. Before You Start
Run through this checklist before every shift. Skipping pre-operation checks is how machines get damaged and operators get hurt.
- Check the engine oil level using the oil sight glass. Do not start the engine if oil is low.
- Check the fuel level. Make sure the fuel filter is in place before filling the tank.
- On the MTR-80L and similar models, confirm the leak stopper is seated in the tank cap. Fuel will splash through the vent hole during operation if the stopper is missing.
- Inspect the dust sleeve. It keeps debris out of the spring cylinder and must be in good condition before use.
- Check the pre-cleaner and air cleaner cover for damage or clogging.
- Check all screws and bolts for tightness. Vibration works fasteners loose over time, so check every session.
- Inspect the foot. The laminated wood and tempered steel plate take a beating. Look for cracking, delamination, or unusual wear.
- Verify the fuel shut-off valve is in the open position before attempting to start.
Break-In Period Note
For the first 20 hours on a new MTR-80L, use a fuel mixture of 20 parts gasoline to 1 part motor oil. Check your specific model's manual for break-in requirements before first use.
2. Setup
- Position the rammer on stable, level ground before starting.
- Confirm the fuel shut-off valve is open.
- Set the throttle lever to the IDLE position before starting the engine.
- Make sure bystanders are clear of the work area.
- Put on required PPE: hearing protection, safety boots, and gloves at minimum.
3. Operating the Machine
Starting the Tamping Action
- Start the engine according to your model's starting procedure and allow it to reach idle.
- Grip the handle assembly firmly with both hands.
- Move the throttle lever quickly from IDLE to the FULL OPEN position. Do not move it slowly. Slow throttle movement can damage the clutch, springs, or foot.
- The rammer will begin its tamping cycle immediately at full speed.
During Operation
- Always run the rammer at full speed. Operating below full RPM puts stress on the clutch springs and foot. The MTR40F is designed to run between 3,800 and 4,100 RPM. The MTR-40HS runs at 4,100 RPM. Check your model's spec sheet for the correct operating range.
- Use the combination throttle lever to manage engine speed if conditions require adjustment, but keep the machine at its rated operating RPM during tamping.
- Guide the rammer with steady control. The machine does the compaction work. Let it move at its own pace and maintain your footing.
- Adjust tamping passes based on soil conditions. Loose or wet soil may require multiple passes before moving to the next section.
- Keep the foot in full contact with the ground during each stroke for consistent compaction.
Stopping the Tamping Action
- Move the throttle lever back to the IDLE position to stop tamping.
- Allow the engine to return to idle before shutting down completely.
4. Key Safety Points
- Never move the throttle lever slowly from idle to full open. Always make it a quick, deliberate movement.
- Never operate the rammer below full speed during tamping. Partial throttle damages the clutch and springs.
- Keep bystanders away from the operating area. The foot and lower assembly can eject debris.
- Do not operate on slopes that exceed safe limits for your model.
- Know the location of the nearest emergency services before starting any job site.
- Use proper lifting technique when moving the rammer. It is heavy and awkward. Carry it by the handle only.
- When loading into a truck bed, use the roller if equipped and always tie the rammer down for transport.
- Drain the fuel tank before transporting the rammer over long distances or rough roads.
5. After Operation
- Allow the engine to cool before performing any service or inspection.
- Turn the engine ON/OFF switch to the OFF position.
- Close the fuel shut-off valve by moving the fuel cock lever to the CLOSED position.
- Wipe down the rammer and inspect for any damage, loose fasteners, or worn components.
- Check the oil level again after the engine has cooled.
- Store the rammer upright in a clean, dry location away from fuel sources.
- If storing for an extended period, drain the fuel system to prevent gumming and carb issues.
6. Keep Your Machine Running Right
A jumping jack rammer takes constant impact. Worn feet, failing clutch springs, clogged air cleaners, and loose fasteners are the most common sources of downtime. Staying ahead of those issues starts with using the right parts on a regular maintenance schedule.
