How to Operate a Multiquip Jumping Jack Rammer: A Contractor's Guide

Whether you are putting a new operator on the machine or running one for the first time yourself, knowing the correct procedure keeps the equipment running and keeps people safe. This guide covers everything from pre-op inspection through shutdown, based on Multiquip's official operation manuals.

1. Before You Start

Run through this checklist before every use. Skipping it is how clutches, springs, and feet get destroyed before their time.

Check the engine oil level using the sight glass. Do not run the machine low on oil.
Check the fuel level. Use clean, fresh gasoline.
New machine break-in: For the first 20 hours of operation, use a mixture of 20 parts gasoline to 1 part motor oil instead of straight gasoline.
Confirm the fuel filter is seated in the tank before filling.
Confirm the leak stopper is in place inside the tank cap. Fuel will splash out through the vent hole during operation if it is missing.
Inspect all screws and bolts for tightness. Vibration will loosen fasteners over time.
Check the dust sleeve. It prevents dust and debris from entering the spring cylinder and must be intact before operation.
Check the air cleaner and pre-cleaner. A clogged or damaged air cleaner allows dirt into the engine.
Inspect the foot. It should be free of cracks or excessive wear. The foot uses a laminated wood base with a tempered steel plate for shock absorption.

2. Setup

Position the rammer on stable, level ground before starting.
Open the fuel shut-off valve by moving the fuel cock lever to the open position.
Set the throttle lever to the IDLE position before starting the engine.
Grip the handle assembly firmly on both sides. Never operate the rammer with one hand.

3. Operating the Machine

Starting Tamping Action

Start the engine according to the engine manufacturer's procedure and allow it to reach idle.
Grip the handle firmly with both hands.
Move the throttle lever quickly from IDLE to the FULL OPEN position in one smooth, fast motion.
The rammer will begin tamping. The foot should strike the ground at a consistent, rapid rate.

Critical: Do not move the throttle lever slowly. Slow movement causes irregular operation and will damage the clutch, springs, or foot. Move it fast and all the way to full open.

During Operation

Always run the rammer at full speed. Operating at partial throttle puts stress on the clutch springs and foot without delivering proper compaction.
Most Multiquip tamping rammers are designed to run between 3,800 and 4,100 RPM at full operation. At optimal RPM, the foot strikes at the correct rate for effective compaction.
Adjust your direction of travel and tamping pressure based on soil conditions. Work in overlapping passes to ensure even compaction.
Keep the machine moving steadily. Letting the rammer bounce in one spot without advancing can cause uneven compaction and unnecessary wear on the foot.
Maintain a firm grip on the handle at all times. The rammer will try to walk, especially on loose or sloped ground.

4. Key Safety Points

Wear appropriate PPE: steel-toed boots, gloves, eye protection, and hearing protection. Tamping rammers generate significant noise and vibration.
Never operate the rammer on slopes that exceed safe working limits for the machine and soil type.
Keep bystanders and other workers clear of the operating area. The foot can eject debris.
Never leave a running rammer unattended.
Do not transport the rammer while the engine is running.
Drain the fuel tank before transporting over long distances or rough roads.
When loading the rammer into a truck, use the roller if equipped. Bring the rammer to the tailgate roller-side toward the truck bed. Always use proper lifting technique and tie the machine down securely.
Know the location of the nearest medical facility before starting work on remote job sites.

5. After Operation: Shutdown and Storage

Move the throttle lever back to the IDLE position and allow the engine to cool for a few minutes.
Turn the engine ON/OFF switch to the OFF position.
Close the fuel shut-off valve by moving the fuel cock lever to the CLOSED position.
If storing the machine for an extended period, drain the fuel to prevent gumming in the carburetor.
Wipe down the machine and inspect it for any damage, loose fasteners, or worn components before the next use.
Store the rammer upright in a dry, secure location away from heat sources.
