How to Operate a Multiquip Jumping Jack Rammer: A Guide for New Operators

Jumping jack rammers are workhorses on trench backfill, footing prep, and tight-space compaction jobs. If you are putting a new operator on one for the first time, or running one yourself for the first time, this guide walks you through correct operation from pre-start to shutdown. Following the correct procedure protects the operator, protects the machine, and gets you consistent compaction results.

1. Before You Start

Run through this checklist before every shift. Skipping pre-op inspections is how machines get damaged and operators get hurt.

  • Check engine oil level and top off if needed
  • Check fuel level
  • Inspect the tamping foot for cracks or wear
  • Check the spring box and clutch area for visible damage or loose hardware
  • Inspect the guide handle for secure mounting
  • Look for any fluid leaks under or around the machine
  • Confirm the throttle lever moves freely between IDLE and OPERATION positions
  • Make sure the work area is clear of bystanders and debris
  • Confirm ground conditions are level. Do not operate on sloping ground or embankment sides. Uneven loads cause premature wear and create unstable, hazardous conditions.

2. Setup

Position the rammer on flat, stable ground before starting. Stand directly behind the machine. You will hold the guide handle firmly with both hands during all operation. Never stand to the side or in front of the machine, and never grip the handle roller at the front of the machine during operation. Damage to the unit and personal injury can result from incorrect positioning.

Set the throttle lever to the IDLE position before starting. On electric-start models, set the start lever to the OFF position before performing any pre-start checks.

3. Operating the Machine

Starting and Warming Up

  1. Start the engine according to the specific startup procedure for your model. Refer to the engine section of your operation manual.
  2. Allow the engine to reach idle briefly after starting.
  3. To begin the warm-up cycle, quickly move the throttle lever from OPERATION back to IDLE several times. Repeat until the rammer operates smoothly. This step prepares the clutch and spring box for full operation.

Beginning Tamping

  1. Move the throttle lever quickly from IDLE to the OPERATION or FULL START position to engage tamping action. Always move the lever quickly. Moving it slowly can damage the clutch or spring box.
  2. Maintain the recommended engine speed. Multiquip rammers in the MTX series are designed to run at 3,800 to 4,100 rpm. The MT-76D2 and MT-86D2 models are designed to operate at 3,300 rpm with 700 impacts per minute. Do not exceed the factory-set rpm for your model.
  3. Running the engine above the recommended rpm does not increase compaction. It actually reduces impact effectiveness by creating resonance instead of a true tamping action, and it can cause internal damage.
  4. The rammer is designed to advance forward while tamping. Use the guide handle to control direction and speed of travel.

Stopping the Rammer

  1. Move the throttle lever back to the IDLE position to stop tamping action before shutting down the engine.
  2. On models with a start lever and safety lever, slowly pull the start lever back until it stops. The safety lever will click into place and hold the start lever in the OFF position.
  3. Allow the machine to come to a complete stop before setting it down or moving it to a new position.

4. Key Safety Points

  • Always stand behind the machine and hold the guide handle with both hands during operation
  • Never operate the rammer while holding the front handle or roller
  • Never operate on sloping ground or embankment sides
  • Do not increase engine speed above the factory-set rpm for your model
  • Always move the throttle lever quickly when engaging or cycling. Slow movement damages the clutch and spring box.
  • Do not touch hot engine parts or exhaust components until the machine has fully cooled
  • Keep bystanders clear of the work area at all times

5. After Operation

  • Let the machine cool before performing any post-operation checks or cleaning
  • Wipe down the exterior and remove caked soil from the tamping foot and lower assembly
  • Inspect the foot, spring box area, and clutch housing for any signs of damage that developed during operation
  • Check oil level after the engine has cooled
  • Store the rammer upright in a dry, secure location
  • Log any issues observed during operation so they can be addressed before the next use
