Why Equipment Safety Matters on Every Pour
A concrete pump moves material under high pressure on a tight schedule. That combination creates real risk for operators, laborers, and anyone working nearby. Mechanical failures, improper towing, and skipped pre-checks are the leading causes of preventable incidents on pump jobs. Pre-Operation Safety Checks
Before starting the engine, work through this checklist. Do not skip steps because the job is running behind.
Trailer and Towing Inspection
- Confirm the towing vehicle and trailer are mechanically sound and in good operating condition before moving on public roads.
- Verify the hitch and coupling on the towing vehicle are rated equal to or greater than the trailer gross vehicle weight rating.
- Inspect the hitch, coupling, and safety chains for wear or damage. A defective hitch or coupling is grounds to stop the move until the issue is corrected.
- Always shut the engine down completely before towing. Never transport the pump with the engine running.
- Once parked, place support blocks underneath the trailer bumper to prevent tipping.
- Use the trailer swivel jack to level the trailer while parked.
Pump and Mechanical Checks
- Check hydraulic fluid, engine oil, and coolant levels before startup.
- Inspect all hoses, clamps, and fittings for cracks, wear, or loose connections. High-pressure failures at fittings cause serious injuries.
- Confirm all safety guards and covers are in place and secured.
- Test emergency stop functions before beginning any pour.
- Make sure the work area is clear of bystanders before starting the engine.
Operating Hazards Specific to Concrete Pumps
Concrete pumps present hazards that general equipment training does not cover. Every operator and supervisor on the jobsite needs to understand these risks.
High-Pressure Line Hazards
Concrete is pumped at significant pressure. A blocked or improperly coupled line can fail suddenly. Never stand in front of a line end cap or a line that is under pressure. Keep all personnel clear of pipeline joints during operation.
Blocked Lines and Blowouts
Blockages build pressure rapidly. If flow stops unexpectedly, shut the pump down before attempting to clear the line. Never use compressed air to clear a concrete line unless the procedure is specifically outlined in your Multiquip operation manual.
Rotating and Moving Parts
The pump drive system includes rotating components that cause severe injuries on contact. Keep hands, clothing, and tools away from all moving parts during operation. Do not remove guards while the machine is running.
Slips, Trips, and Concrete Contact
Wet concrete is a skin and eye irritant. Prolonged contact causes chemical burns. Keep the work area around the pump clear of concrete buildup, standing water, and hose slack that creates trip hazards.
Engine Exhaust
Never operate a gasoline or diesel concrete pump in an enclosed or poorly ventilated space. Carbon monoxide accumulates quickly and is fatal without warning signs. Position the machine so exhaust vents away from operators and confined areas.
Required PPE for Concrete Pump Operation
The following PPE is required for anyone working directly with or around the pump.
- Safety glasses or goggles: Required at all times. Concrete splatter and hydraulic fluid mist are both eye hazards.
- Chemical-resistant gloves: Protect against wet concrete contact during hose connections, cleaning, and any hands-on work near the pump.
- Steel-toed boots: Required for all personnel on the pump site.
- Hearing protection: Engine and pump noise during extended pours can cause hearing damage. Use earplugs or earmuffs rated for the noise level of your equipment.
- High-visibility vest: Required when working near vehicle traffic or on sites with mobile equipment moving nearby.
Safe Shutdown and Storage
Proper shutdown protects both the equipment and the crew coming back the next day.
- Flush the pump and lines completely after every pour. Hardened concrete in the system causes blockages and damages components.
- Relieve all hydraulic pressure before disconnecting any lines or fittings.
- Shut the engine down fully before performing any maintenance or inspection.
- When storing the trailer-mounted unit, place support blocks under the bumper and level the trailer with the swivel jack. Do not leave the trailer resting on an uneven surface or unsupported hitch.
- Secure all hoses and pipeline sections so they cannot shift during storage or transport.
- Log any mechanical issues observed during the shift so they are addressed before the next operation.
