Generator Will Not Start
Possible Causes
- Low or no fuel in the tank
- Fuel valve is closed or clogged
- Choke is not set correctly for cold starts
- Spark plug is fouled, worn, or improperly gapped
- Low oil level triggering the low-oil shutdown sensor
- Battery is discharged (on electric-start models)

- Verify fuel level and confirm the fuel valve is in the open position
- Inspect the fuel filter for blockage and replace it if flow is restricted
- Check and clean the spark plug; replace it if the electrode is worn or the ceramic is cracked
- Confirm the oil level is at the full mark on the dipstick before attempting a restart
- Charge or replace the battery on electric-start units and inspect the starter motor connections
- Set the choke to full closed for cold starts, then open it gradually once the engine catches
Generator Runs But Produces No Electrical Output
Possible Causes
- Circuit breaker has tripped
- Faulty or failed automatic voltage regulator (AVR)
- Damaged or open rotor and stator windings
- Loose or disconnected output wiring
What to Check and Fix
- Reset the main circuit breaker and any GFCI outlets before assuming a deeper fault
- Inspect all output terminals and wiring connections for looseness or corrosion
- Test output voltage with a multimeter; if voltage reads zero with the engine running at correct RPM, the AVR or stator is the likely culprit
- Replace the AVR if voltage output is unstable or absent; this is a serviceable part on most Multiquip models
Low or Unstable Voltage Output
Possible Causes
- Engine not running at the correct speed (typically 3600 RPM for 60 Hz output)
- Generator is overloaded beyond its rated wattage
- Worn brushes or slip rings (on brushed generator models)
- AVR out of adjustment or failing
What to Check and Fix
- Check engine RPM with a tachometer and adjust the throttle governor if speed is off target
- Calculate the total wattage of connected loads and remove any that push the unit past its rated capacity
- Inspect brushes for wear; replace them if they are worn down to the wear indicator line
- Inspect slip rings for pitting or buildup and clean or replace as needed
Generator Overheats or Shuts Down Under Load
Possible Causes
- Blocked or restricted cooling air intake
- Generator is operating in an enclosed or poorly ventilated space
- Engine oil level is low
- Unit is running at or beyond rated load for extended periods
- Dirty or clogged air filter restricting airflow to the engine
What to Check and Fix
- Clear debris from all cooling vents and the air intake screen
- Relocate the unit to an open area with at least three feet of clearance on all sides
- Check and top off engine oil immediately; never run the unit dry
- Clean or replace the air filter; a foam or paper element clogged with dust starves the engine of air
- Reduce connected load and allow the unit to cool before restarting
Engine Runs Rough or Surges at Idle
Possible Causes
- Stale or contaminated fuel
- Dirty carburetor jets or float needle sticking
- Air leak in the intake manifold or carburetor gasket
- Spark plug gap is out of specification
What to Check and Fix
- Drain old fuel and refill with fresh, stabilized gasoline; stale fuel is one of the most common causes of rough running
- Remove and clean the carburetor thoroughly, paying close attention to the main jet, pilot jet, and float needle
- Inspect the carburetor mounting gasket and intake boot for cracks; even a small air leak will cause surging
- Re-gap or replace the spark plug to the specification listed in the engine service manual
Excessive Smoke from Exhaust
Possible Causes
- Blue or white smoke: oil burning due to overfilled crankcase or worn piston rings
- Black smoke: engine is running too rich from a stuck choke or dirty air filter
What to Check and Fix
- Check the oil level; if it is overfilled, drain it to the correct level and retest
- Confirm the choke is fully open during normal operation
- Replace the air filter if it is heavily soiled
- Persistent blue smoke after correcting oil level points to internal engine wear and requires disassembly for diagnosis
When to Call a Dealer vs. Fix It Yourself
Many of the issues above are within reach for a mechanically capable contractor with basic tools. Fuel system cleaning, filter replacement, spark plug service, and breaker resets are all reasonable field repairs.

- Zero voltage output after confirming the AVR, breakers, and connections are good
- Confirmed stator or rotor winding failure (requires rewinding or replacement)
- Internal engine damage such as seized components, rod knock, or persistent oil burning after basic correction

- Any repair that requires breaking into the alternator housing without the proper tools and torque specs
