Engine Won't Start

Low AC Voltage Output

- Engine speed is running below the rated RPM

What to Check and Fix
- Reduce the connected load. Add loads one at a time and monitor voltage with a meter to identify the threshold where voltage drops
- Check the engine speed with a tachometer. Adjust the governor or throttle to bring RPM to the rated specification listed on the data plate
- Inspect and test the capacitor even if it is not visibly damaged. A weak capacitor will cause low voltage under load
- Tighten all terminal connections and clean any corrosion from contact points
Engine Overheats or Shuts Down Under Load
Possible Causes
- Cooling fins and air passages are blocked with dirt or debris
- Low engine oil level has triggered thermal protection
- Generator is operating in an enclosed or poorly ventilated space
- Overloaded beyond rated wattage for sustained periods
What to Check and Fix
- Shut down the unit and blow out all cooling fins, air intake screens, and exhaust areas with compressed air
- Check and correct the oil level before restarting
- Relocate the generator to a position with at least three feet of clearance on all sides and ensure exhaust is directed away from any structure
- Audit your connected load. If you are running close to or above rated capacity for extended periods, the unit will overheat
Engine Runs Rough or Surges

- Carburetor is dirty or has partially blocked jets
- Stale or contaminated fuel in the tank or fuel lines
- Spark plug is beginning to fail
- Governor linkage is sticking or out of adjustment
What to Check and Fix
- Drain and replace old or contaminated fuel. Fuel left sitting for more than 30 days without stabilizer can varnish carburetor passages
- Clean the carburetor with an appropriate cleaner. If jets remain blocked after cleaning, rebuild or replace the carburetor
- Replace the spark plug as part of routine diagnosis. It is a low-cost step that eliminates a variable quickly
- Inspect the governor linkage for binding, loose springs, or bent components. Adjust per the service manual specification
