Picking the wrong plate compactor costs you time, fuel, and compaction quality. Before you look at any model, get clear on three things: the material you are compacting, the depth of your lifts, and the size of the area you are working in.

Granular soils like sand and gravel respond well to a lighter, faster machine. Cohesive or mixed soils need more centrifugal force and a heavier plate. Confined spaces such as trenches and utility cuts require a compact footprint and easy maneuverability. Open flatwork jobs favor a wider plate and higher travel speed to cover ground efficiently.

  • Undersizing for the material. Using a light forward plate on cohesive clay or deep lifts leads to failed compaction tests and rework. If your job calls for more than 6 inches of cohesive soil per lift, move up in machine class.
  • Oversizing for the workspace. A wide, heavy reversible compactor in a narrow utility trench is a liability. Choose a plate width and machine length that fits the work area.
