Why Maintenance Matters for This Machine
A plate compactor works hard in demanding conditions. The vibrating mechanism, drive belt, clutch, and engine all take a beating on every job. Skip routine service and you will shorten the life of the machine, increase downtime, and risk failures mid-job when you can least afford it. The Multiquip MVC40H and MVCi60 have specific maintenance requirements built around their design. Following those requirements keeps the machine performing to spec and protects your investment.
Daily and Pre-Operation Checks
Before starting the machine each day, work through the following checks. Catching a problem before operation is always faster and cheaper than dealing with a breakdown on the job.
- Inspect the vibrating plate for wear, deformation, cracks, or breakage.
- Check the handle for deformation, cracks, or breakage.
- Inspect the guard frame and lifting grip for deformation, cracks, or breakage.
- Check the shock absorber for visible deformation, cracks, or breakage.
- Verify the wheel kit operates correctly if equipped.
- Check the battery lock lever on the MVCi60 for proper operation and confirm the rechargeable battery is securely seated.
- Look over all bolts and screws for looseness or missing fasteners. Material and quality grade are marked on each bolt and screw for reference during replacement.
- Check engine oil level before each start on gas-powered models.
Periodic Maintenance Schedule
The following schedule is based on Multiquip service manual guidance for the MVC40H and MVCi60 plate compactors. Use hours as the primary interval and calendar time as a secondary reference.
| Interval | Service Task |
|---|---|
| Before each use | Inspect vibrating plate, handle, guard frame, lifting grip, shock absorber, battery lock lever, all fasteners |
| Before each use | Check engine oil level |
| Periodically during use | Check V-belt tension and condition (MVC40H) |
| Periodically during use | Inspect clutch outer drum for seizure and "V" groove for wear or damage; clean groove as needed |
| Storage over 30 days | Drain fuel tank completely or treat with STA-BIL; run engine until fuel is consumed |
| Storage over 30 days | Drain engine crankcase oil completely; follow engine manufacturer storage procedure |
| Storage over 30 days | Drain hydraulic oil from the vibrating case completely |
| Storage over 30 days | Clean entire machine, remove all dirt and foreign matter from the bottom plate |
| Storage over 30 days | Cover with plastic sheeting and store in a clean, dry location |
| MVCi60 storage | Stop motor, allow machine and motor to cool, remove rechargeable battery before storing |
| MVCi60 storage | Store upright on level ground, indoors, covered, away from moisture, dust, and direct sunlight |
Key Service Items
Engine Oil
Check the engine crankcase oil level before every start. When storing the MVC40H for more than 30 days, drain the crankcase completely. Refill with the oil type and viscosity specified in your engine owner's manual. Running the machine with low or old oil is the fastest way to cause irreversible engine damage.
Fuel System
If the machine will sit unused for more than 30 days, you have two options. Drain the fuel tank completely and run the engine until it burns through the remaining fuel in the lines and carburetor. Alternatively, treat the fuel with STA-BIL fuel stabilizer before storage. Either approach prevents gum and varnish buildup that clogs carburetors and fuel passages.
Hydraulic Oil in the Vibrating Case
The MVC40H uses hydraulic oil in the vibrating case to lubricate the eccentric mechanism that drives compaction force. Before any storage period exceeding 30 days, drain this oil completely. Refer to your service manual for the correct fluid type and refill volume when returning the machine to service. Do not run the machine with contaminated or depleted hydraulic oil in the vibrating case.
V-Belt
On the MVC40H, the V-belt transfers power from the engine to the vibrator pulley. To remove the belt, take off both the upper and lower belt covers. Use an offset wrench (13 mm) on the vibrator pulley fastening bolt. Wrap a cloth around the midpoint of the V-belt on the left side, pull it back firmly, and rotate the offset wrench clockwise to release the belt. To reinstall, seat the belt on the lower vibrator pulley, push it to the left side of the upper clutch, and use the same clockwise rotation of the offset wrench to seat it. Check belt condition every time you service the clutch.
Clutch
The clutch is serviced at the same time as the V-belt on the MVC40H. With the belt removed, visually inspect the outer drum for seizure. Check the "V" groove for wear or damage and clean it as needed. Inspect the lining and shoe for wear. A worn clutch lining reduces engagement and compaction output. Do not defer clutch inspection if the belt is already off.
Rechargeable Battery (MVCi60)
The MVCi60 runs on a rechargeable battery system. Always remove the battery before storing the machine. Verify the battery lock lever operates correctly before each use. Store the battery according to the manufacturer's guidelines to preserve charge capacity and service life.
Signs It Is Time to Replace Parts
Do not wait for a failure before acting. Watch for these specific indicators that a part needs replacement:
- V-belt: Visible cracking, fraying, glazing, or stretching. A belt that slips under load or squeals during startup needs immediate replacement.
- Clutch lining or shoe: Visible wear past service limits noted in the manual. Reduced compaction output with no other obvious cause often points to a worn clutch.
- Clutch outer drum: Scoring, seizure marks, or a damaged "V" groove that cannot be cleaned to a serviceable condition.
- Vibrating plate: Cracks, deep gouges, or deformation that affects contact with the ground surface.
- Shock absorbers: Visible cracks, deformation, or handle vibration that has increased noticeably during operation.
- Guard frame or lifting grip: Any crack or deformation. These are safety components and must not be run in a damaged state.
- Fasteners: Any bolt or screw found loose or missing during pre-operation inspection should be replaced before the machine runs.
