Why Maintenance Matters for This Machine

The Multiquip QP2TH is a gas-powered trash pump built for demanding jobsite conditions. It moves water loaded with solids, debris, and abrasive material that accelerates wear on every internal component. Skipping or delaying maintenance on this machine does not just shorten engine life. It causes seal failures, impeller damage, and unexpected downtime in the middle of a job. A consistent maintenance routine keeps the pump primed, the engine healthy, and your crew working without interruption.

Daily and Pre-Operation Checks

Before every start, work through this checklist. These checks take under five minutes and catch most problems before they become failures.

  • Check engine oil level. Add oil if needed. Never start the engine below the minimum mark.
  • Inspect the fuel level. Use fresh, clean gasoline. Stale fuel causes hard starting and carburetor fouling.
  • Look over all hose connections and clamps. Loose fittings cause air leaks that kill prime.
  • Inspect the suction strainer. Clear any debris that would restrict flow before startup.
  • Check for visible fuel or oil leaks around the engine and pump housing.
  • Confirm the spark arrester is in place and unobstructed. A clogged or missing arrester is a fire hazard and a code violation on many sites.
  • Verify the pump housing drain plug is seated if the unit was stored drained.

Periodic Maintenance Schedule

Follow the intervals below based on hours of operation or calendar time, whichever comes first. Harsh conditions, such as pumping silty or heavily contaminated water, shorten these intervals. Use your judgment and inspect more frequently when the machine is working hard.

Key Service Items

Engine Oil

Use the oil grade specified in your QP2TH operation manual for the ambient temperature range you are working in. Change oil after the first 20 hours of operation on a new or rebuilt engine, then every 50 hours after that. Always change oil when the engine is warm so contaminants stay suspended and drain out fully. Dispose of used oil properly.

Air Filter

The QP2TH runs a dry foam or paper air filter depending on the engine configuration. Inspect it every 50 hours. A dirty filter restricts airflow, richens the fuel mixture, and increases fuel consumption. Clean a foam element with warm soapy water, let it dry completely, and re-oil lightly before reinstalling. Replace paper elements rather than attempting to clean them. Replace any element that is torn, saturated, or deformed.

Spark Plug

Inspect the spark plug at 50-hour intervals. Look for carbon fouling, oil deposits, or electrode wear. A fouled plug causes hard starting, rough idle, and power loss. Clean and re-gap if the electrode is in good shape. Replace the plug at 100 hours regardless of appearance. Use the plug type and gap specification listed in your manual for the specific engine on your unit.

Spark Arrester

The QP2TH is equipped with a spark arrester on the exhaust. This component traps and cools exhaust sparks before they exit the muffler. It is required equipment in many jurisdictions, particularly on fire-risk jobsites. Remove and inspect the arrester at 100-hour intervals. Clean carbon buildup from the screen using a wire brush. If the screen is cracked, warped, or has holes, replace the arrester before returning the machine to service. Refer to Figure 23 in the QP2TH Operation Manual for the correct removal procedure.

Mechanical Seals and Pump Wear Parts

The pump's mechanical seal sits between the engine and the pump casing. It prevents water from migrating into the engine. This seal wears gradually and also degrades when the pump is run dry, even briefly. Inspect for weeping or seepage at the seal area during each service interval. The impeller and wear plate also erode over time when pumping abrasive material. Reduced flow rate and loss of prime are common indicators that these parts need attention.

Fuel Filter and Fuel System

Inspect the fuel filter at 100-hour intervals. A clogged filter starves the carburetor and causes hard starting, surging, or stalling under load. Replace the filter if it shows any discoloration or blockage. Before storing the unit, drain the carburetor float bowl to prevent varnish buildup from stale fuel gumming the jets.

Signs It Is Time to Replace Parts

  • The pump loses prime repeatedly during operation, which often points to a worn mechanical seal or damaged suction hose.
  • Output flow drops noticeably with no change in operating conditions. Check the impeller and wear plate for erosion.
  • The engine smokes, runs rough, or uses more fuel than normal. Inspect the air filter, spark plug, and carburetor.
  • You see water or oil seepage at the seal housing. Replace the mechanical seal before the damage reaches the engine bearings.
  • The spark arrester screen is clogged, cracked, or has any breach in the mesh. Do not run the machine until it is replaced.
  • The engine is hard to start or misfires under load. A new spark plug and fresh fuel resolve most cases. If the problem continues, check valve clearance and carburetor condition.
