Insufficient Vibration: Concrete Won't Level or Smooth Properly
Possible Causes
- Eccentric weights are set too low, producing centrifugal force that is too weak for the application
- Engine speed is running below the required RPM
- Excessive concrete has built up along the leading edge of the blade
- The blade width selected is too large for the engine configuration being used
Fixes and What to Inspect
- Adjust the eccentric weights according to Figure 8 in your DuoScreed operation manual to increase centrifugal force output
- Increase engine speed to reach the correct operating RPM
- Clear any excess concrete from the front of the blade before continuing
- If you are running a single engine, keep blade width within the maximum limits. Two engines are required for widths up to 20 feet. Reduce blade width if you are exceeding what your current engine setup can handle
Screed Vibrates Too Much and Won't Travel Smoothly Across Rail Supports
Possible Causes
- The selected blade width and eccentric weight settings do not match each other
Fixes and What to Inspect
- Verify that the eccentric weights are correctly adjusted to match your selected blade width. Use Figure 8 in the operation manual as your reference
- Mismatched weight-to-width configurations are a common setup error. Walk through your pre-pour checklist every time blade width changes on a job
Concrete Looks Wavy After the Screed Blade Passes Over It
Possible Causes
- Operator is moving too slowly across the slab
- Vibration level is too high for the type of concrete being placed
Fixes and What to Inspect
- Increase your walking pace moving backwards. A slow pass allows too much vibration to act on one area of the concrete surface
- Reduce engine speed to bring vibration down to a level appropriate for your concrete mix
- Combine both adjustments: lower engine speed and walk at a faster pace to find the right balance for your pour conditions
Leaving High or Low Spots During Wet Screeding
Possible Causes
- Concrete level is uneven across the pour area before screeding begins
- The blade does not have a consistent amount of material to work against as it travels
Fixes and What to Inspect
- Have workers rake and shape concrete as close to grade as possible before the screed makes its pass
- Maintain approximately 1 inch of concrete across the entire front of the blade at all times during the pass
- Inconsistent concrete depth in front of the blade is the most direct cause of high and low spots. Keep your crew ahead of the screed and communicating throughout the pour
Blade Digs Into Wet Concrete
Possible Causes
- The blade is not positioned correctly relative to its riding surfaces
- One end of the blade is riding on a form while the other end is riding on wet concrete, creating an uneven plane
Fixes and What to Inspect
- Check that both ends of the blade are riding on the same type of surface before each pass
- Both ends must ride on forms, or both ends must ride on wet concrete. Mixing the two surfaces causes the blade to dig in and disrupt the pour
- Reposition the blade or adjust your form setup so both ends have a consistent reference surface

Most of the problems above are operator and setup issues you can resolve on-site without sending equipment in for service. Adjusting eccentric weights, clearing blade buildup, correcting engine speed, and fixing blade positioning are all field repairs any experienced operator can handle.
