Why Equipment Safety Matters on Every Shift
A Wacker Neuson skid steer loader is a capable, productive machine. It is also a machine that can seriously injure or kill an operator or bystander when used incorrectly. Wacker Neuson designs these machines with safety in mind, but the operator and site supervisor carry real responsibility for how the machine is used each day.
Every person who operates, maintains, or works near this equipment must be trained and familiar with the risks involved. Untrained personnel must not operate or service the machine under any circumstances. Pre-Operation Safety Checks
Before starting the machine at the beginning of any shift, complete the following checks. Do not skip steps because the machine worked fine yesterday.
- Read and understand all operator manuals delivered with the machine. Keep them stored with the machine at all times.
- Confirm all safety devices and guards are in place and functioning correctly.
- Verify all controls respond correctly before moving the machine.
- Inspect the machine for visible damage, fluid leaks, or missing hardware.
- Check that all machine labels are present and legible. Replace any that are damaged or missing.
- Confirm the fuel cap is in place and properly tightened. Never operate the machine with a loose or missing fuel cap.
- Walk the work area before operating. Identify ground conditions, slopes, trenches, pit edges, and any overhead hazards.
- Know the rules and hazard zones for your specific jobsite before moving the machine.
Operating Hazards Specific to This Machine
Skid steer loaders present hazards that differ from other equipment on the jobsite. Supervisors and operators need to understand these before work begins.
Tip-Over and Ground Stability
Skid steers have a compact footprint and can tip when loaded on unstable or uneven ground. Always verify that the ground surface can support the full weight of the machine and its load. Use extra caution near the edges of trenches, pits, and elevated platforms.
Visibility and Bystander Risk
The operator has limited sight lines, especially with an attachment raised or a loaded bucket. Keep unauthorized personnel, children, and bystanders completely clear of the operating area. Remain aware of where other workers and equipment are positioned at all times.
Attachment Hazards
Only use attachments and accessories approved by Wacker Neuson for the specific model you are operating. Unapproved attachments create unpredictable load conditions and increase tip-over risk. Never modify or defeat any safety device on the machine.
Fire Hazard
Do not operate the machine in areas containing flammable materials, fuels, or vapors. Keep the area around the muffler clear of debris including leaves, cardboard, and paper. A hot muffler can ignite debris and start a fire quickly. Keep appropriate fire suppression equipment accessible at all times.
Impairment Prohibition
The machine must not be operated by anyone impaired by alcohol, drugs, or prescription medications that affect judgment or reaction time. This applies to all operators without exception.
Unattended Machine
Never leave a running machine unattended. If you must leave the operator position, lower all attachments to the ground, engage the parking brake, and shut the engine down.
Required PPE
Personal protective equipment is required whenever operating or working near this machine. At minimum, operators and ground personnel must wear:
- Hard hat
- Safety glasses or impact-rated eye protection
- Protective gloves when handling components or performing maintenance
- Steel-toed safety boots
- High-visibility vest when working around other equipment or traffic
Follow all legal and site-specific regulations regarding PPE. Where local requirements exceed this list, the higher standard applies.
Safe Shutdown and Storage
Proper shutdown protects both the operator and anyone who approaches the machine after the shift ends.
- Lower all attachments fully to the ground before leaving the operator seat.
- Engage the parking brake and allow the engine to cool briefly before shutting off.
- Turn off the engine and remove the key.
- Perform a post-operation walkaround. Note any damage, fluid loss, or control issues and report them before the next shift begins.
- Store the machine on level ground in a secure area. Do not park on slopes or near the edges of excavations.
- Never allow anyone to remain under a raised attachment. Hydraulic systems can lose pressure and cause a raised component to drop without warning.
Keeping Your Equipment Safe
Consistent maintenance performed by trained personnel is the single most effective way to prevent equipment failures that lead to injuries.
