1. Before You Start
Run through this checklist before every use. Do not skip it on repeat deployments. Conditions change between shifts.
- Inspect the pump casing, strainer, and discharge port for visible cracks, dents, or blockages.
- Check that the strainer is clean and fully secured. A clogged or missing strainer allows solids to enter the impeller and cause damage.
- Inspect the power cord or hard-wired connection for cuts, fraying, or exposed conductors. Do not operate the pump with a damaged cord.
- Confirm the power supply voltage matches the pump's rated voltage before connecting.
- Verify that all hose connections are tight and routed to an appropriate discharge location.
- Check that the discharge hose is free of kinks and that the outlet end is positioned away from personnel and the work area.
- Confirm the pump is rated for the type of water being handled. Wacker Neuson submersible pumps are designed for clear water or water containing solids up to the size listed in the model's specifications. Do not use them for flammable, corrosive, or chemically contaminated liquids.
2. Setup
Proper setup directly affects pump performance and service life.
- Place the pump in the water at the lowest point of the area being dewatered. The pump must remain submerged during operation.
- Connect the discharge hose to the pump's discharge port and secure it firmly. Route the hose so water flows away from the work area and drains to an appropriate location.
- Make sure the power cord is routed safely out of the water before it reaches any electrical connection point. Keep connections dry.
- If using an extension cord, confirm it is rated for outdoor use and matches the amperage requirements of the pump.
- Do not allow the discharge hose to loop or rise above the pump's maximum head rating. Check the model specifications for this value.
3. Operating the Machine
Starting the Pump
- Confirm the pump is submerged and the discharge path is clear.
- Connect the pump to the power source. The pump starts automatically once power is applied.
- Observe the discharge hose immediately after startup. Water should begin flowing within a few seconds. If it does not, disconnect power and inspect for blockages or dry conditions.
During Operation
- Monitor the water level. Never allow the pump to run dry. Running without water causes the motor to overheat.
- Check periodically that the discharge hose has not shifted, kinked, or become blocked.
- Keep personnel clear of the discharge stream and the electrical connections at all times.
- Do not handle the pump or electrical connections while the unit is powered on.
Shutting Down
- Disconnect power to the pump before removing it from the water.
- Allow any remaining water in the hose to drain before disconnecting hose fittings.
- Remove the pump from the water only after power has been fully disconnected.
4. Key Safety Points
Electrical and water hazards are present any time you operate a submersible pump. Follow these points without exception.
- Never operate the pump in water where personnel are present. Electrical current in water is a fatal hazard.
- Always disconnect power before handling the pump, adjusting hoses, or clearing blockages.
- Do not use the pump in flammable, explosive, or chemically contaminated environments.
- Replace defective parts immediately. Do not operate the pump with a damaged cord, cracked casing, or missing strainer.
- Use ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection on all electrical connections when working outdoors or in wet conditions.
- Keep electrical connections elevated and protected from contact with water or mud.
- Do not exceed the pump's rated flow or head specifications. Operating outside rated parameters shortens machine life and can cause failure.
5. After Operation
Consistent post-operation care extends the service life of your pump significantly.
- Disconnect all power before handling the pump after shutdown.
- Rinse the pump exterior and strainer with clean water to remove mud, silt, and debris.
- Inspect the strainer, casing, and cord again for damage that may have occurred during use.
- Drain the discharge hose completely and store it coiled to prevent kinking.
- Store the pump in a clean, dry location. Protect the cord from sharp edges and heavy objects during storage.
- If the pump will be stored for an extended period, consult the operator's manual for specific long-term storage procedures for your model.
