This engine assembly powers the MTX50HD, MTX60HD, and MTX70HD tamping rammers, delivering the mechanical force required for high-impact soil compaction. The replacement engine is designed to operate at 3,800-4,100 rpm at maximum governed speed with no load, producing 644-695 impacts per minute at optimum performance. This air-cooled, 4-stroke overhead camshaft single cylinder gasoline engine features 6.0 cubic inches (98cc) of piston displacement and generates 2.8 hp at 3,600 rpm. The unit uses a recoil starter system and requires 0.3 quarts (0.28 liters) of automobile oil, Class SE or higher.

The engine transmits power through a centrifugal clutch that engages as engine speed increases. Operating the rammer at less than full throttle speed can result in damage to clutch springs or the tamper foot. Regular maintenance includes monitoring the 2.7-quart fuel tank capacity and checking oil levels. Uses NGK CR5HSB spark plugs and runs on unleaded gasoline.
