Chainsaw Chain Measurement Guide

Pro Tip: Check Your Bar First

Most chainsaw bars have the pitch, gauge, and drive link count stamped directly on the side. Before measuring, flip your bar over and look for a series of numbers, it's the fastest way to confirm your exact chain spec.

Help Me!

Step 1: Find Your Pitch

Pitch is the distance between chain links. Using a ruler, measure the distance between any three consecutive rivets and divide that number by two. Your result will match one of two standard sizes: .325" or 3/8"

Step 2: Find Your Gauge

Gauge is the thickness of the drive link (the part that fits into your bar groove.) The easiest way to find it is to check your bar or saw manual. STAG chain is available in .043", .050", and .063" gauge. If you're unsure, a coin test works: a dime fits .050", a penny fits .063".

Step 3: Count Your Drive Links

Drive links are the small tabs on the bottom of the chain that fit into the bar groove. Count every one around the full loop, that's your drive link count. This number combined with your pitch and gauge gives you the exact chain spec you need.
